Interview: James Supercave

James Supercave

Formerly known as MASXS, Echo Park's most dreamy band, James Supercave, has finally released their debut EP The Afternoon. These guys have been working at it for quite some time now, having changed band names multiple times, and collaborating with and adding other musicians before comfortably settling on James Supercave. You may have heard of them, seen them, or even lit a cigarette with their custom matchboxes as they were playing around Los Angeles Quite a bit before they dropped off and started over. Their new name is sort of dreamy, as is their unique self-categorized "Art Pop". Their Radiohead influences come through loud and clear on this EP, and lead Vocalist Joaquin Pastor practices his own take on Falsetto by blending in and out of it. It's Pop but its rock. It's dreamy but complex in just the right way. These are some talented dudes and they're finally getting the attention they deserve. Their March residency at Echo Park's The Echo was jam packed and now they are touring and playing shows with bands such as Future Islands and Warpaint. I was feeling really proud of them so I decided to ask Joaquin a few quick questions via text convo because we are teenage girls.
I call this the "How Does it feel?" interview because I used that twice in the first two questions.

Playtime Posse LA: How does it feel to have after just releasing your debut EP to have played a show with Future Islands, one of the most popular bands this year, who also just released a new amazing album?
Joaquin Pastor: It was a fekking incredible night. Marfa, TX is a special special place. Future Islands dominated. They had some issues and the keyboardist had to play their whole set with our keyboards-completely different sounds and it didn't matter one bit. The performance was inspiring. Fetish-y dance moves and dad jokes mixed to perfection. Our set went really well too ha!

PTPLA: How does it feel to have finally, after years of working on music (and literally playing your heart out), released a successful EP?
JP: It feels really grounding to have released the EP. Been cooking a long time and I feel proud of the recordings. People have different views on this but for us, if it's not right, it's gonna stay on the laptop. This was right.

PTPLA: What are your guys' main musical influences?
JP: Naturally influences come from all over the place but some main ones are Bowie,  Talking Heads, and The Radioheads.

PTPLA: What do you feel sets you apart from mainstream music right now?
JP: Mainstream music? is that a band?

PTPLA: Favorite local band?
JP: Facial

PTPLA: This ones for the ladies. Who in the band is single?
JP: Everyone's for sale. Patrick takes commission on everything tho. Fucking Slave Driver.

There you have it Ladies, They're for sale, but you can't buy em with money I don't think so I don't know what to tell you. Also, they only hang out with each other so don't even bother.
If you haven't heard The Afternoon you should check it out, better yet buy it!
