Manhattan Murder Mystery by Endless Meghan

It’s a Monday night at Harvard and Stone and the show is running late, but what else is new? It’s L.A. and this is a music show, besides most of this crowd is here for Manhattan Murder Mystery, possibly the only band who can take on the last time slot and have a bigger turnout than the headliner.
The riff raff gathered near the stage hold cheap beers or a smuggled concoction poured into a bar glass. This is prep for the inevitable “social” Matthew Teardrop would be calling for later in the set. For now, the small crowd pressed together rabbles loudly over the sound check, hugging as though it’s been a dog’s age since they last saw each other when in reality it’d been two days since the last party and a week since the last show that gathered the community under one rotting roof. Feelings and time are often forgotten at Manhattan Murder Mystery shows, newcomers are welcomed by MMM veterans who have endured life with the band’s slow building career.
The house music lowers, Matthew Teardrop stands with his back to the audience and right index finger pointed in the air and the opening notes of “Smokey Mountain” are greeted with raised drinks and out of sync cheers. Swaying to the rhythm, gears shift as everyone yells with Teardrop “and tonight” and bodies begin knocking into each other. It isn’t slam-dancing, it isn’t hugging; it isn’t done in spite or love; it’s an understanding gesture. Those standing so close to the Harvard and Stone stage have been relating to Matthew Teardrop’s lyrics for amounts of time varying from weeks to years. With verses of self loathing in its most heartbreaking forms – remembering an old flame’s number (that long time MMM followers will spout out along with him) and choruses questioning whether he ever wanted to live at all, Matt Teardrop surfaces the thoughts everyone has, but never talks about.
A fan favorite, the soul crushing “Luxury Liner”, slows the room down as everyone stands solo with only elbows brushing as the notes from Mateo’s keyboard take us “down by the docks” while Matt Teardrop reminds each heart of a once good time now lost. The room turns somber during this song, occasionally someone will shed tears, but no judgments are ever thrown at an MMM show.
Before moving on, Teardrop raises his glass filled with the finest Canadian whiskey and says, “Who wants to take a social?”
Following the count off on Laura’s drumsticks, the bands goes into “Too Tough to Survive”, another (at the time) unreleased MMM song new to most Harvard and Stone patrons standing at the bar, but familiar to the people dancing with spring heels and no regard to those standing too close to the circus.
After years of shows, some more infamous than others, Manhattan Murder Mystery has long been a legendary whisper in L.A. A band everyone and no one has heard of until this year when they signed with Indiscretion Records who will be releasing their overdue album, Dumb.
To tide us over, a fan and friend of MMM, Mike James, directed the video for “Too Tough to Survive” featuring the faces fans and friends dancing and hanging out at the Church of Fun. The video is fun and oddly nostalgic; it also restores hope that despite Manhattan Murder Mystery breaking through to the masses, we can always count on Matthew Teardrop slowing down the band during their finale, “Cop Car”, to hand over his guitar to an unsuspecting friend, start the crowd chanting “I was in the back of a cop car” before disappearing outside for a cigarette while the audience dances their last bits of emotions out until the next MMM show.

TUBBY BOOTS

I have booked a large number of music shows over the past 10 years here in Los Angeles. So many shows with so many bands and there are way too many to remember. However, there are always those that stand out. Those bands that once you see them at your favorite shitty bar, or smelly place, they're apart of your life forever. If you've known me long enough, you've known that one of my all time favorite bands is  Tubby Boots. They have been a band that has never stopped impressing me even when they weren't actively playing shows in the L.A. area. While I was here in Echo Park drowning in psych rock and crying over a stack of demo CD's that I had gotten from them years ago...they were somewhere busy writing recording and perfecting their very first album "The Emerald Captain". Having just touched their toes in the pool of their own creative potential, they are coming back around and playing shows again. You can catch Tubby Boots (at my next show) Thursday October 6th at The Airliner Bar in Lincoln Heights along with a few other great bands that I can't wait to tell the world about. Almost 10 years in the making, but well worth the wait here is Tubby Boots rebirth...

Los Angeles, a city where most people are artists, and everyone is a dreamer. Being an underground musician in Los Angeles isn’t easy. Balancing work, and our passions, we do what we have to do to keep our dreams alive. If there is any musician that embodies the “Los Angeles Dream” and works hard to make his dreams come true, it is Boyle Heights based artist, Nk-Riot.

NK-Riot started from scratch years ago with just a guitar, and after years of hard work and a few adjustments, he is now getting the attention he deserves. Known for being an inspiration to youth in his hometown of Boyle Heights, and reminding kids that anything is possible, he is taking it one step further by influencing the next generation of “Rioteers”. This January he will be leading a modern youth workshop in his neighborhood and has plans to teach kids how to build monophonic synthesizers, as well as play them. This local inspirator is also known for being a progressive inventor. By creating his own custom designed equipment, and custom-made chrome head wear with a wireless microphone and built in LED lights, he is taking the Los Angeles music scene by storm. He has also created his own unique merchandise, including his 2015 invention the “Holo-Display” that allows fans to view his enthralling holographic music videos from their mobile phones. Nk-Riot has opened for acts such as southern bounce queen, Big Freedia, and has graced The Echoplex stage at L.A.’s fastest growing street music festival, Echo Park Rising. His soulful and electrifying performances have his fans everywhere calling him our musical revolutionary. This September 10th you can catch him live at Azul Bar for Main Fest in Alhambra where he will be performing along-side acts such as Miami Horror, !!! (CHK CHK CHK), Capital Cities and Nite-Funk.

James Supercave: Better Strange

A few years back I was sitting on a couch watching Stephen Kings "The Shining" after breakfast with these dudes. That was right after I'd heard my first song by a previous version of this band and fell in love with them. In my personal opinion, they we're having trouble finding their own direction back then, but there was still some undeniable talent lurking underneath the surface waiting to be exposed, to the right deserving audience of course. They're romantic and nostalgic artsy sounds resemble that of an early Radiohead. Although we're not as close as we once we're, I've been a fan ever since and these guys have come quite a long way. Here is James Supercave with their newest track "Better Strange" in a cute, creepy, and colorful animated music video.

You can find these guys on Spotify, or visit their website: JamesSupercave.Com. If you'd like to see them perform live, which is something you definitely need to do to get the full James Supercave experience, they're playing this Wednesday 11/11 at The Echo. Here's the Facebook invite.

Here we are, #Wearethefuture

After a year long hiatus, I am back. Not only to talk about some recent changes in my personal life but to get the ball rolling again by keeping you informed on some cool unique & local music. I no longer work at Lot 1 Cafe, Thank the lord. I finally had it in me to walk away from the ugliness and I am free! So I am on the hunt for a new job, and looking forward to the future. (p.s. if anyone has any questions about my reason for leaving so abruptly, please feel free to reach out and ask as I will not hesitate to share and speak the truth about some very important issues in our community, including labor, artist labor, and true community support.)

MOVING ON...

We're here to talk about the future. Why? because we are the future, we hold the future in our greedy little hands. For years I have been stuck in a world where garage rock was the only type of music. At shows, since Sean Carnage stopped his Monday nights, it was all a bore, and all I wanted to do was dance! Leather Jackets, Trendy hippy wear, Pabst Blue Ribbon, everything that just wasn't me.(Although I salute all you 70's model folk that can pull off affording such outfits and wearing them in 100+ degree weather.) It had been a really long time since I'd seen anything I was truly impressed or inspired by UNTIL THIS...
You've probably seen me talk about it before, if you pay any attention. He's been doing this for quite some time, but you may have missed it, and I don't think he's messing around you guys, maybe it's time to pay him some attention.
I know I'm not whatever popular music blog that is feeding you the same nonsense over and over again, Hell I'm not even a journalist, but I just want to share what I think you might enjoy--whoever you are.
So here I present to you, Boyle Heights based artist NK-RIOT.
The one man daft punk of our time...Who recently created his own version of a mobile hologram display so that you may watch his new back to the future themed video on it.
Here's the video:

but you really need to see his live performance...

and sometime soon, because the future is now...

Playtime Posse's super homiest homies, The Most Best have come to the rescue many times and graced us with their talent and various different Playtimeposse shows, so if you're reading this you might have seen them once or twice. With that being said, I couldn't be happier to be sharing their new music video for the song titled 'Watch out'. With sexy cool vocals by Laura Peters, These guys are ringing in 2015 with Just the kind of funky indie you've all been craving.
Here's their new super blue and super sexy video...Enjoy!

The Most Best-Watch Out

Monday, August 4, 2014

I am very excited to announce a new venture for Playtime Posse! This month is the first of my new monthly at the OG Airliner Bar! Located at 2419 N Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90031 in Lincoln Heights, it has been around for quite some time hosting a wide variety of live music nightly! The Airliner is also home to the world famous weekly night Low End Theory that takes place Wednesday nights and has grown so much over the years here.

I am starting off this series by kickin it old school and hosting another baR. Kelly takeover!
For those of you who haven't already attended a baR. Kelly night, it's an R. Kelly Tribute night that originally took place in Koreatowns one and only bar-arcade, Blipsy Barcade, but could not be continued due to lack of transportation on my part. "baR. Kelly" started out as a joke, that I thought of and could not give up the idea of making it happen. I just kept saying to my friends "I'm gonna start an R. Kelly tribute night and play 90's hip hop and R&B cause its my ish" jokingly of course--but you can only half joke about something for so long until all you're left with is seriousness. With the help of few close friends this night turned out to be a success and something I look forward to making happen whenever I can!  Some of my homegirls who have DJ'd the night, even took the party to claremont and made a name for it there calling it BOOTLEG baR. Kelly! (you go girls!).

This month's very special baR. Kelly will include some one time-only Ladies of the 90's cover songs by J'Dende of Luna Is Honey ft. Deija Marie; Stacey Baretta of Sons Of The Bitch; Xe Davis of Gun/Her; Andrew Flores of Ssleaze; Britney Houston & The Broads ft. members of The Most Best; and last but not least Kybele.

This months DJ's include DJ MP3--DJ LIS BOMB--DJ SHYBOYANDYC
The Event strictly 21+ (NO ID NO ENTRY)
$5 all night (ladies get in free before 10pm)

**For more info and updates on the event RSVP HERE.**
I hope to see you all bumpin and grinding on the dance floor!
